A Beautiful Non-Tragedy
Picture this: robed and masked characters, a smoky setting, striking and enchanting lighting, and a seemingly magical protagonist dressed in romantic, flowing gowns. Where might a person be? At an In This Moment concert fronted by Lead Singer Maria Brink, a modern day, toughened up, Marilyn Monroe-type who guides a beautifully theatrical performance packed with entrancing singing, engaging dancing and music, and gorgeous costume changes. Bassist Travis Johnson adds an element of dangerous delight with his rockin’ hot, tattoo-covered body and face hidden by a frighteningly sexy metal mask with only ice blue eyes shining through. At the Cleveland show, Maria Brink introduced the rest of the brutish men, Lead Guitarist Chris Howorth, Rhythm Guitarist Randy Weitzel, and Drummer Kent Diimmel as “dirty gentleman” and “handsome animals.”

Is that all there is? No. Oh, no! The theatrical demonstration is merely the setting for an incredibly engaging musical experience. With undercurrents of powerful artists like Nine Inch Nails and Linkin Park, the alternative metal music of In This Moment magnetically draws in the audience members and keeps them hypnotized song after song. Maria Brink’s exceptional voice is widely ranging from singing soft and beautiful melodic lines to roaring furiously, all within the same addictive song, like in Burn and Roots (listening to Roots is a must!). Cleveland fans loved all of the originals such as Sick Like Me to the crowd-pleasing Phil Collin’s cover In the Air Tonight. In This Moment has all the talent and ability to stand behind the band’s mesmerizing visual display.
Power and Passion
Based on statements made during the show and her very powerful lyrics and singing ability, Maria Brink represents the wide-ranging potential of a passionate and powerful female, or any human, really. To explain the concept behind the song Whore, Maria states that the song is about “rising above other people’s expectations,” and taking other people’s hate and turning that into something powerful and liberating. Yes, quite moving and inspirational, thank you! At the very end of the encore in Cleveland, Maria provided a super nice shout out, acknowledging the audience and everyone present at the venue, reminding us all to “take care of each other and be kind to each other.”
This is a beautifully descriptive article about a most unusual looking group. Of all the music I listened to, I enjoyed “Whore” the most. The pictures are absolutely breathtaking!!!!!!!
